My favorite hat is 25 years old. That doesn't mean I'm will to give up my age just yet. Seems like such a long time although I'm considered young to some people. We have been through a lot together my hat and I. It has been a true friend keeping my secretes for years now while I wear it comfortably upon my head. I often receive many comments on how great my hat style compliments me. That always makes me reminisce of just how long I have had my cowboy hat and how it is the best hat because of all the years we have spent together. It makes me think of all the conversations I have had while it rest upon my head. The people I've met and the places we have been together.
It may seem silly to explain it this way but I'm sure if you think of some of your favorite things you'll understand. Cowboy hats, purses, sunglasses, shoes and the like can become dear friends. Let's just enjoy the idea of the simple and practical use of something. I'm not saying relationships are to be over looked or sold short. I've also heard that if our pets could talk some of us might be embarrassed. Best of all we just might have some great stories to tell about our favorite things.
As I was mentioning my cowboy hat is 25 years old and I can't help but think of three great stories I have to share about how this hat will last a lifetime. I got it when I was 23 years old. You do the math. I came upon this hat at an outdoors show in Reno Nevada. I put it on and immediately felt the common bond that we belonged together. Of course it was much more than I was willing to pay or to be honest, than I had at the time. Thank goodness for fathers with cash that love their daughters.Besides being grateful for my leather and suede hat I would love for you to understand the connection that's been created. Kind of like peanut butter and jelly, Qwick Draw McGraw and Baba Looie, what about The Lone Ranger and Tanto. Oh goodness I may have just aged myself.
The best hats memories come to mind when I almost burnt it. We got lost in the wilderness Easter day while in Montana a few years later. Realizing the night was closing in with the chilly air I had to get a fire going to hopefully keep me safe and warm through the night. My hat almost became a sacrifice for survival as I lay close to the fire trying to stay warm. Something I'm not proud of but managed to escape with the best hat and a great lesson learned.
Hat styles differ for each person. My practical hat had now become more comfortable, gained more character and seemed to become a partner in most events. I attended my first Rodeo with my cowboy hat upon my head. Wow those cowboys are crazy kept going through my mind. It was hard to believe that their hats could stay on with such and incredible ride. I was amazed and wanted to get their autographs. With nothing to sign I hesitated to take the best hat off my head and have it signed by a young man named Chris Shivers who later became a great bull rider and a PBR champion. The best hat had just gained more charterer and memories that will last a life time.
I often took my hat with me when I vacationed. While in Vegas our group rushed in and out of a cab as we tried to keep on track with our itinerary. Sad to say my cowboy hat took off in that cab before I realized it. I tried to locate my leather and suede hat I thought would last a life time. I called the cab company every month or so in hopes that it might turn up. After about 6 months I gave up. The cowgirl in me seemed to disappear. I found it difficult to try different hat styles yet I knew I had to move on. As I searched for another cowboy hat I found many hat styles that bring out the cowboy in you. Low and behold I received a box in the mail about 9 months later. Imagine the happiness I experienced. The best hat had been returned to me. Accompanied with a note from the cab driver that it had been push down into the seat and couldn't be seen. If it were not for the flexible material it would have been crushed without repair. Apparently a curious little boy pulled it out. My hat and I have been through a lot together and the memories will last a lifetime.
